Nearby supermarkets

  • Walking 8 minutes towards Vrijdagmarkt you can find a Carrefour Express. It's not too big and rather expensive, but it's good for buying a limited number of items on the way back to the apartment for example.
  • Close to the Dampoort train station you can find a big Carrefour Market (12 min walking). Perfect for doing general grocery shopping.
  • Cheaper products are to be found in Aldi (8 min walking)
  • The closest supermarket is a Polish shop, Wisla, only 2 min walking, open on Sundays till 20:00 where most products are imported from Poland. Good for some last minute or quick shopping.

If you only need bread, vegetables, cheese, then the Lousbergmarkt is a qualitative and nearby option (4 min walking). On Fridays and Saturdays they also have a butchery on site.

If you need something and all regular supermarkets are closed, there are still some options:

  • The OKay Direct in the Belforstraat (13 min walking) is a small shop open 24/7 where everything is self service. You need to register an app to be able to enter. It is cheaper than night shops.
  • The nearest night shop is 9 min walking from P36, and is close to the Dampoort station. In the city centre you will find plenty more night shops.

Nearby bakeries

Since most supermarkets also bake bread nowadays (although it is bread that was prebaked, then frozen and then at the shops baked till completion), there are not many real bakeries left in the neighborhood.

  • CoPain in Lousbergmarkt is still a traditional bakery, with many artesanal, local products. It is not the lightest type of bread, nor is it the cheapest, but most people really like it. 4 min walking. Also open on Sunday morning.
  • Hawin is a Turkish bakery that we like, with great white bread, sunflower shaped breads and very long opening hours. 9 min walking. Open on Sundays.
  • In Breadfast, a sandwish shop, they also sell bread from a bakery they cooperate with, although only 2 types of bread. 6 min walking.

To find other bakeries you will need to go more into the center, where Himshoot is the oldest bakery of Ghent. Close to it you have a more modern bakery Aernoudt. Both are about 15 minutes walking from P36.

If you're into patisserie or expensive croissants, then have a look at Joost Arijs (12 min walking). It is also a chocolatier. Madam Bakster in the Brabantdam also creates lovely pies.

For more chocolatiers, you can find a dozen of them close to the bellfry, all good ones! We're a chocolate country for a reason 😉 Even the more commercial ones like Neuhaus and Leonidas are recommendable as they offer good value for money.

A chocolatier where we like to go is Fauve chocolade, located in the pancake house Gwenola
